Mollera sumida (2023)

Real life

Mollera sumida (flat head) is a Mexican term used to ridicule individuals perceived as being of low rank in a particular social aspect, often implying deficiencies in intelligence or literacy. Contrastingly, our indigenous communities express significant concern for babies affected by this condition, scientifically known as plagiocephaly. Instead of being a target for mockery, these communities consider it a bad omen, attributing its origins to potential abuse or neglect, even during the prenatal stage.

The sculpture allegorizes the notion that one could be “born wrong”, implying a supposed “right” way of birth. This statement is intentionally ironic, emphasizing that individuals aren't accountable for the predetermined aspects of their existence, such as race, gender, or socioeconomic background. From birth, we carry the weight of human history and get shaped by it, influencing how society perceives and treats us. This allegory elucidates the sense of innocence, beauty, and powerlessness experienced by marginalized communities.

teach me how to fight (back) (2023)

Teach me how to fight back embodies the essence of resilience, representing the inherent strength found within marginalized communities through their ongoing battles against social inequality. Its purpose is to critique the commercialization of the term “resilience”, which often burdens minorities with the expectation to grow from systemic oppression rather than dismantling these systems altogether. The figure prominently features a fist with fingers arranged unconventionally, symbolizing unwillingness to keep engaging in combat or resistance.
